I found a lump above my Caesarean scar, is this something to worry about? January 25, 2017 Thank you for writing us here at Ask the Expert. You don't give any details about this lump you have found, whether painful in the touch and movement, how long since I had the caesarean section, or if it's only in an area or around the entire scar of the caesarean section, so my answer will be very general. There are a number of possibilities as to what might be the cause of the lump you have found including: Haematoma This is where a collection of blood is produced in the tissues around the wound of the Cesarea Section after surgery. It often appears as a lump and then gradually the skin becomes colored as a bruise. This will take about 2 weeks to resolve and you may find that old blood will be omitted from the holes in the healing wound. as it solves. scar tissue This occurs because there has been a break in the body tissues as a result of the Caesar Section. The body produces more than one protein called collagen, as part of the healing process. Collagen accumulates where the tissue has been damaged, helping to heal and strengthen the wound. For a period of approximately three months or more, the new collagen continues to form and increase the blood supply, which makes the scar rise, lumpy and red. A collagen then breaks down on the wound site, the blood supply decreases and the scar gradually becomes softer, smoother and easier. Although scars are permanent, they may fade for up to two years. It is unlikely that they will fade more after this time. Incisional hernia Because of having a Caesar Section, the abdominal wall muscles can be weaker and some tissue may be lurking through a weakened area in your pelvic area. If a hernia is present you can find that the area is particularly tender and painful in the movement, cough and when you get up. Endometriosis This is rare but can occur as a result of the lining of endometrial lining and instead of being released normally during menstruation, the cells are detached and filtered back into the pelvic cavity and adhere to scars and other abdominal organs. As the endometrial grows every month and thickens the lumps can form. The disease particularly at the time of menstruation can be noticed. Next Steps We suggest that you look for an appointment with your GP to review this package as soon as it is convenient to exclude the presence of a hernia or endometriosis.
